What to Know About the Updated SAT Suite of Assessments The SAT, a standardized test commonly used as a measure for college admissions, has undergone many changes since its inception in 1926. Its most recent update has been its transformation to the SATSuite of Assessments, which includes four tests that span middle and high school. Regardless of your grade level, and if youve already taken an older version of the exam, heres what you need to know about the updated SAT Suite of Assessments: New tests in theSAT Suite of Assessments In addition to the already established SATand PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), the Suite now includesthe PSAT8/9 and PSAT 10. As their names suggest, the PSAT 8/9 is intended to be taken in the fall or spring of eighth and ninth grade as a foundation for college readiness and the PSAT 10 can be taken in the spring of tenth grade, a check-in point along the continuum of student learning. The PSAT/NMSQT and SAT have been revised as well, with the latter as the anchor of the suite. The Suite of Assessments prioritizes the tracking of student progress over time, so that both teachers and students can identify areas of improvement and work on them. Content changes The redesigned SAT will no longer require essay writing, as it did very recently; instead it will offer the essay as an optional component some colleges may ask of their applicants. The four tests will have a Reading Test, a Writing and Language Test, and a Math Test, all of which are closely aligned. An important change to note is theres greater emphasis on words in context, instead of obscure or archaic vocabulary for which the SAT has been famously known. Other key content changes focus on student command of evidence, analyzing a source, essential areas of math, real-world contexts, analysis in science and social studies, and close readings of U.S. founding documents and engagement in global conversation. In addition, all four tests will use a common score scale so that growth in certain skills can be easily tracked across assessments. As an added bonus, this scale will include more scores (subscores and cross-test scores), so students will have better information about how they are performing on the test. Lastly, in this new system, the SAT will revert back to a 1600 point scale from 2400. For example, a poor grade or a criminal record can almost always be addressed adequately in a personal statement and in many cases create the basis for a lesson learned or personal transformation theme. Less serious but just as damaging are typos and other careless mistakes. At a minimum, you should have a friend look through any written material you submit. Otherwise, consider using a professional service to review and polish your application materials. The money you spend on application services will be a fraction of your overall law school budget and can pay for itself with even a small scholarship or an increase in the ranking of the schools you are admitted to. VT: What do Law School admissions officers look for most in an applicants essays/personal statements? Jens: Admissions officers want to be certain that the applicant is making the right choice by choosing to become a lawyer, and also that the applicant will be a good fit for a particular law school and student body. For example, regional law schools will often look for a commitment to the local community in addition to the applicants academic interests. In addition, admissions committees are always interested in learning about how an applicant has dealt with past challenges and obstacles. VT: Is there anything on a students application that would automatically disqualify them from being considered for the program? Jens: Lying, dishonesty, and concealing information the applicant is required to disclose. Even if an admissions committee doesnt uncover any comprising inconsistencies or information in an application, this could come back to haunt the applicant during the state bar admission process and even result in the withdrawal of the graduate's law school diploma. VT: What about the Law School admissions process differs the most from undergraduate admissions? Jens: The emphasis on how well the applicant does on a standardized test. Compared to undergraduate admissions and even most other graduate and professional programs, the LSAT score can truly make or break an application. VT: What kinds of things (experience, grades, etc.) might a student lack that would lead you to advise them not to apply? Jens: A spotty academic record or a very poor LSAT score would make admission to most law schools an uphill battle. In particular, an applicant with a very low LSAT score should seriously consider whether law school is the right choice. Ethical transgressions such as a history of academic dishonesty will also create challenges for an applicant and would have to be addressed directly in the application. VT: Is there anything you might see on a students application that would quickly put them ahead in the running? Jens: LSAT scores in the top one percentile. Things get less competitive at schools outside the top ten, but even then an applicants LSAT score remains the single best predictor of how successful a law school applicant will be (and, incidentally, of how they will do in their first year of law school, according to the ABA). Outstanding performance on college-level debate and mock trial tournaments can also give students a significant boost, although they are generally coupled with very high LSAT scores. VT: What advice do you have regarding LSAT test prep? Jens: As with all parts of the application, start early. Anyone seriously considering law school should take a sample test as soon as possible. Except for the most exceptional applicants, enrolling in an LSAT prep course or working with a tutor is sure to pay off. An improvement of a few points on the LSAT can be what it takes to get into a higher ranked school or to secure a scholarship. VT: What do law school admissions officers look for in recommendation letters? Jens: Recommendation letters are important in supporting and corroborating various other parts of the application--in particular, the personal statement. It is far better to select someone that knows the applicant well and provide a strong recommendation than one with an impressive title who will do a perfunctory job. The recommender should know the applicant's story and should ideally echo its key themes in the recommendation. Get Ready for Six LSATs a Year! LSAT Law School Blog This June, the LSAT announced that during the 2018-19 school year the number of LSATs will expand from four to six administrations annually. This is undoubtedly excellent news for test takers who will obviously appreciate the added scheduling flexibility. However, there is an even bigger benefit for prospective law students looking to improve upon a previous score â€" beginning with the September 2016 exam there will no longer be any limit on the number of LSATs a test taker can record over a two-year period. The Law School Admission Council has announced these changes as part of an ongoing effort to reduce the barriers to entry into law school. New and veteran LSAT students alike should welcome this news. For those students who are just beginning their prep, it could give them a chance to fine tune their schedule if they are targeting the 2018 application cycle. Veteran LSAT takers on the other hand will also no longer feel the Sword of Damacles dangling above them on their third attempt in 18 months, if they’ve not quite yet reached your target score. 2017-18 â€" The Transition Year Because LSAT test dates are announced a year in advance, test dates through February 2018 will not be changing as part of this announcement. In addition to the recently completed June 12, 2017 exam, those dates are as follows: September 16 / September 18 (Saturday Sabbath Observers) â€" 8:30 AM December 2 / December 4 (Saturday Sabbath Observers) â€" 8:30 AM February 10 / February 12 (Saturday Sabbath Observers) â€" 8:30 AM 2018-19 â€" Six Tests Begin The 2018 LSAT testing year will still begin in June with the annual Monday exam at 12:30 PM on June 11, 2018. Then, there will be subtle shifts in the calendar beginning in the fall as the gaps between 2018-19 administrations begin to shorten to ultimately allow six exams in total: September 5 (Saturday Sabbath Observers) / September 8 â€" 8:30 AM November 17 / November 19 (Saturday Sabbath Observers) â€" 8:30 AM January 26 / January 28 (Saturday Sabbath Observers) â€" 8:30 AM March 30 / April 1 (Saturday Sabbath Observers) â€" 8:30 AM Monday June 3, 2019 â€" 12:30 PM The June 2019 test will also be considered as part of the 2018-19 testing calendar, as the start of the testing calendar will shift to July for the 2019-20 year. 2019-20 will then kick off with another Monday test July 29, 2019 at 12:30 PM, with another five tests to be announced next summer. What Does this Mean for LSAT Students? More than anything, it means there is significantly less wait time for the average potential law student. Gone are the days of having to plan for any test administration at a minimum a whole season in advance. Now, this doesn’t mean that like the GMAT or GRE there are tests being held on a nearly weekly or daily basis in the major metropolitan markets, but it does mean that if a student must reschedule because of an unexpected life or career conflict they can do so in a more rapid fashion. The other beneficiaries of this change will be students who feel they underperformed. There will still be the 3-4 week delay on score reports, but now, within two months, students will be able to take the test again and without the fear of potentially only having one chance left to take the exam for two years! This will also enable students to maintain their prepping momentum as they ready themselves for a repeat attempt, rather than having to try and extend their focus for an additional 2-4 months minimum.
